What is meant by "but despair was my loyal ally" in the following context from "Nowhereman" by Aleksandar Hemon:
I mean How do you parphrase it?
Does he say that "but it was alright, because I was desperate about everything?"

I had never taught anything in my life,let alone English, but despair was my loyal ally.
