zu dem Studenten (declension)

Hello,

I have noticed and know that plural nouns take a "-n" ending in Dative, such as:

"aus den Häusern", "von den Leuten", etc. I am also not sure if there are any exceptions to this rule.

However, the realization that this happens also in singular is relatively new. I don't quite understand how often this happens, either. Here is an example:

"Hallo", sagt sie zu dem Studenten, der hinter den Büchern kaum zu sehen ist (from the novel "Der Tote im Moor")
